Glossary of Terms: Medications
Psychiatric medications, sometimes called psychotropic or psychotherapeutic medicines, treat mental illnesses.
While there are well over 100 medications commonly used in psychiatry, many resources exist to help you get the information you’re looking for:
- The National Institute of Mental Health’s guide describes the types of medications used to treat mental disorders, side effects of medications, directions for taking medications, and also any FDA warnings.
- Fact Sheets about individual psychiatric medications (scroll down to the Medications section) from NAMI-MN include FDA alerts, brand/generic names, possible side effects, drug interactions, and prescription assistance programs that may be available by the manufacturer.
